Little Good Harbour

Barbados

This small, low-key, relaxed and out of the way property lies on Barbados' sleepy north-west coast. It offers spacious, cottage-like suites equipped with full kitchens, and dining in The Fish Pot, a casual-chic beachfront restaurant that is one of the most appealing places to eat on the island.

Rooms from£199per night

Location

8 / 10 0

Up in the north-west corner of Barbados in the little fishing community of Shermans. It flanks either side of the coastal road, which is generally quiet, except when buses come whizzing through. Down the lane, simple local chattel houses lie by the roadside and fishing boats are hauled up. The unkempt sandy beach running along from Little Good Harbour has a certain charm but is by no means perfect: it backs on to the road, can be narrow at high tide, and there are rocks underwater.

You feel a world away from the busy and flashy parts of Barbados. Most guests rent a car for all or some of their stay. The nearest town is lovely, old-fashioned Speightstown, five minutes' drive away; Holetown, focal point of the west coast's tourism, is 20 minutes' drive.

Style & character

9 / 10

The property is divided into two areas. On the inland side of the coastal road lies almost all the accommodation, housed in quaint, Creole-style cottagey, clapboard units with louvred shutters, and reached via pathways thick with bamboo, ferns, palms and bougainvillaea and dotted with Asian sculptures.

On the sea side of the road lies The Fish Pot restaurant, a lovely old coral-stone building (originally a mini 17th-century fort) where a casual-chic atmosphere pervades, both in its art-filled dining rooms and the covered open-air dining decks that extend along the back of the beach.

Service & facilities

7 / 10

Little Good Harbour's hands-on owner is Andrew Warden, a debonair Australian who can be seen most days working his socks off in the restaurant charming guests. Andrew also owns The Atlantis, on Barbados' east coast. The hotel manager is Graham Dear, a chatty and very obliging Bajan.

There are two attractive swimming pools overseen by Balinese sculptures, a homely little spa and a gym. Kayaks are available free of charge, and a water-taxi service operates along the west coast (for a fee).

Rooms

9 / 10

All the 19 accommodation units are called suites, though given their spaciousness and the fact that they all have proper kitchens, apartments might be a better term. Cheapest options are split-level, cottage-like one- and two-bedroom Garden suites with a downstairs sitting room and kitchen, and upstairs bedroom with four-poster bed draped with mosquito netting.

The six newer three-bedroom Vineyard suites have more individual furnishings, bigger and better-equipped kitchens, plus lovely large terraces perfect for outdoor dining; these are a great option for families or groups of friends. Bathrooms are typically large, marble affairs with big walk-in showers. The best-located accommodation, and the only unit on the sea side of the road, is the rustic two-bedroom Oceanfront Fort Suite; set above The Fish Pot and the beach, it has a lovely big, airy sitting room and terrace.

All suites come equipped with tea/coffee-making facilities and fresh milk. You can pre-order groceries.

Food & drink

9 / 10

The Fish Pot is one of my favourite places to eat on Barbados. It does fantastic salads, excellent, straightforward fish dishes and memorable curries; prices are more reasonable and the atmosphere more casual than at most of the island's other top-end restaurants.

A superior continental breakfast – including warmed croissants, banana bread, and a well-presented fruit platter – is included in the room rate; cooked dishes are available for an additional charge.

Value for money

7 / 10

One-bedroom Garden suites from £218 (US$310) in low season; rising to £352 (US$500) in high. Not cheap by any means, but you do get a lot of space and amenities in the rooms for your money. Continental breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi.

Access for guests with disabilities?

No.

Family-friendly?

Lots of families stay at Little Good Harbour, with the larger suites ideal for families. The Fish Pot has a children's menu.

Eat your way around Barbados

Restaurant guide: eat your way around Barbados

Tuck in to flavourful Bajan-inspired food across the island from lavish high-end restaurants to in-the-know local favourites

Plate of sauteed scallops, on a large white plate, micro herbs around scallops
Fine dining experience: book in at The Cliff for a memorable meal

Food in Barbabos is as vibrant as the island and its people. And that doesn’t just apply to typical tasty Bajan food. Virtually every style of cuisine seems to be available in hundreds of restaurants, yet every dish seems to have been given a power boost in terms of flavour.

This is down not only to the local produce – ripe, sweet fruit and veg and super-fresh fish in particular – but the chefs, who just love to experiment with different combinations of ingredients and spices.

A number of chic restaurants in idyllic seaside settings command a lavish budget, but there are plenty of mid-range options and others that are excellent value.

Here are some suggestions but you really can’t go too far wrong in Barbados. And don’t forget to try the nectar from one of Barbados’ four rum distilleries.

West coast

Starting at the top end, The Fish Pot is in an old fort and serves up catches that come in to the neighbouring fishing community at Six Men’s Bay. The chef cleverly brings out the natural flavours and the setting is a delight.

There’s more seafood at the rustic, homely Fisherman’s Pub in the pleasingly ramshackle Speightstown, along with grilled chicken with rice ’n’ peas.

Nearby Juma’s combines Caribbean, French and Thai cuisines and has an inviting three-course menu that could include flying fish pate followed by thai green curry and rum and raisin cheesecake.

At the eponymous restaurant on the beach at Mullins, you can sample fish cakes, steaks and salads looking out over a classic scene of palms and powder-blue water.

Heading down into Holetown, you’re spoilt for choice. Sea Cat does British-style cod and chips, but you should go local and try amberjack, grouper or barracuda – or ask for a platter if you can’t decide.

Plate of crepes with sauce, and garnishes on white plate

Upmarket Nishi presents top-class sushi and sashimi as well as bistrostyle main dishes.

A little further south you enter the zone of glamorous waterside restaurants frequented by celebrities.

Cin Cin by the Sea and Daphne’s are great but if you want one very special experience while in Barbados, book in at The Cliff. It’s pricey, so make the most of your evening by turning up to watch the sunset with a cocktail on the wooden terrace, overlooking the cutest little cove on the island, before taking your seat for dinner.

Bridgetown sometimes gets overlooked for a foodie night out but there’s a decent selection of eateries here. Waterfront Café on the quayside is a good bet for succulent shrimps and live music and is apparently a favourite of Rihanna.

It’s easy to work out what Lobster Alive offers at the top end of Carlisle Bay. The spiny crustaceans in the tank are flown in live from the Grenadines by the restaurant’s owner on his private plane. A medium lobster, enough for two, will set you back about £45.

South coast

A perennial hotspot in Barbados’ south is Champers, where generous portions of quality meat and fish – and divine desserts – can be enjoyed on the terrace above the waves. It won’t break the bank either.

Tapas is making a name for itself with a choice of small dishes such as calamari and ceviche, as the name implies, or bigger plates of grub including West Indian curry.

Blakey’s on the Boardwalk is reliable for gourmet burgers and hunks of grilled fish, while for lighter fare visitors are raving about the waffles and paninis at Bliss Café.

The combination of Caribbean and Japanese cuisine at Naru (jerk spring rolls?) sounds odd but it is receiving great reviews. Plenty of thought has gone into the design of the restaurant, which is right beside the seaside boardwalk.

There’s satisfying value at Shakers Bar & Grill, where a plate of catch-of-the- day in batter with chips and trimmings will cost less than £9. Washed down with a chilled Banks beer, that’s a tasty lunch.

Harlequin is a St Lawrence Gap favourite, with tables out on the deck, jazzy background music and a menu that features meaty king fish, tangy pork chops and pasta dishes.

Man and woman laugh togethe holding beersFor traditional Bajan fayre, the “fish fry” at Oistins is a must.

At the east end of the south coast, near Crane Beach, is a modern take on the Bajan rum shop: Marco Polo. It offers a collection of classic dishes ranging from grilled mahi mahi to lasagne (it’s run by British expats), with locally-sourced ingredients. There’s a short but well-chosen wine list.

East coast

The wild east coast of Barbados inevitably has less choice, but the settings can be magical.

The Round House, a historic inn, looks down on the palm-fringed shore of Bathsheba and has been going for more than a century. The coconut shrimp with vodka-lime sauce is recommended, as are the grilled fish sandwiches.

Open to non-residents, the restaurant at The Atlantis hotel on Tent Bay is charming. It is well known for the West Indian buffet served on Wednesday and Sunday lunchtimes, though the a la carte menu is worth a look too.

Casual Dina’s Bar & Café is relaxing with fishy staples, a house-special macaroni pie and friendly service.

And in the middle…

Much of central Barbados is rural but there are a couple of hidden gems here. Visit the lovely 17th-century Sunbury Plantation House and its horse-drawn carriage collection then dine on calypso chicken or a choice of fish. The Sunday buffet lunch is something of an institution.

Drive around the lanes of inner Barbados and you may come across Judy’s Watering Hole at a crossroads. One of the most revered rum shops, it is perfectly placed for grabbing a box of grilled chicken, rice and okra along with a cool beer.

December 11 & 12, 2015
www.classicalpops.com

We are very excited! Our Lineup for the 2015 Classical/Pops Festival appeals to a broad audience of classical, Hollywood and Broadway/West End fans.

The first night is "Film Night", probably the world’s most popular symphonic program. The orchestra and special guests perform film scores in front of a beautiful big screen playing film montages. It floored our audience last season so we are bringing back an all new program.

The following evening is “Superstars of Broadway” with Audra McDonald and Norm Lewiswith orchestra. Audra is the most decorated actress in Broadway history (ahead of Liza Minelli, Streisand, or Angela Lansbury). Norm is a star of many Broadway blockbusters, most recently as the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera and Javert in Les Misérables. TV credits include the hit series Scandal which cemented his heartthrob status.

Keep your schedule free! Come for the love of music, but you also don't want to miss "the" music event on the Barbados resident and international traveler social calendar.

Islanders travel miles to the old seaside fort in the fishing village of Shermans to eat at this hotel's restaurant, The Fish Pot. The most sought-after seats in the house are those overlooking the sea, particularly at sunset when you can order lobster, grilled prawns and mahi-mahi while watching the sky slowly turn from fuchsia to mauve. But not many regulars have cottoned on to the New England-style, sea-facing wooden cottages in the lush tropical gardens (there are also a handful of suites above the restaurant). Each has a wraparound veranda, a fully equipped kitchen and a light, airy living room filled with books and Barbadian designs. The teak beds upstairs are enormous and the bathrooms small but perfectly formed. Breakfast isn't always quite as spot-on as dinner, but the banana bread - freshly baked each morning - is delicious. There's a tiny spa and two blissful pools, the smallest in the style of a miniature Roman bath with stone columns and water features. Laze in the sun with the resident tabby cat or clamber over the rocky headland to search out hidden coves and glimpse the rock-star mansions that back onto the bay (watch out for the tide, which comes in quickly so that by early afternoon there's only a narrow strip of white sand peeking out from under the shallows). On Friday nights, the nearby Six Men's fish market is the place to go for ice-cold Carib beers and grilled meat, eaten with greasy fingers while perched on wooden benches.

Barbados isn’t just what you see in the glossy leaflets. There’s a flourishing island underneath the media that’s filled with astonishing landscapes and hidden holiday gems. However, the search off the beaten track can sometimes feel a little daunting.

The good news is we’ve found the best way for you to enjoy the real Barbados, and it’s a neat little package known as East Meets West. In 7 glorious days you’ll see the highlights of the East Coast and the West Coast of Barbados. Here’s what this unique holiday involves:

•   4 Nights in a One Bedroom Garden Suite at Little Good Harbour
•   3 Nights in a Coastal or Ocean View Suite at The Atlantis Hotel
•   Daily Continental Breakfast
•   Dinner nightly at The Fish Pot at Little Good Harbour, one of the best restaurants on the Island
•   Dinner nightly at The Atlantis Hotel
•   3 Day Car Hire, so you can explore the island
•   Prosecco in-room on arrival at 1st hotel
•   Welcome drink on arrival at 2nd hotel

So, lets break down East Meets West to see why it’s our recommend gateway into the real Barbados.

beach-view

Little Good Harbour and the West Coast

Little Good Harbour is the honest Barbados, set within a restored 17th century fort in the fishing village of Shermans. There’s a charm to Little Good Harbour that can’t quite be captured in words, but I’ll try regardless. It’s one of the few remaining family run hotels in Barbados, so the hospitality has a distinctly welcoming feel that eludes many modern holiday destinations. Most West Coast hotels are new, polished, commercialised Goliaths, and despite their generally excellent facilities it’s deeply refreshing to see a truly Bajan hotel that still delivers unprecedented excellence.

The all-suite format adopted by Little Good Harbour, coupled with the fabulous tropical garden view with glimpses of the ocean from your terrace (or balcony), creates genuinely peaceful island escapes. Fully equipped kitchens give you as much independence as you like, and four poster beds add a palatable touch of finesse in keeping with the hotel’s colonial origins. The East Meets West package serves up 4 nights in a One Bedroom Garden Suite, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the facilities and see the sights on the west coast.

While we’re on the subject, the west coast of Barbados is awash with trendy bars, exquisite restaurants and stylish boutiques carrying many of the world’s leading retail brands and luxury goods, so you can get a taste of the new Barbados alongside thetimeless charisma of Little Good Harbour.

The Fish Pot

Unlike most hotel restaurants, The Fish Pot at Little Good Harbour is famous in its own right. The Fish Pot built its reputation on an unyielding commitment to fresh food and local seasoning, with a special interest in seafood. The open-air seafront setting adds a tang of saltiness to the air that vouches for the promise of freshness, including speciality dishes such as Lobster ravioli, pan-fried Mahi Mahi, and oven-roasted Sea Bass. The views are spectacular, and the coral stone walls help to distil an unprecedented level of calmness. This quest for culinary supremacy has earned The Fish pot a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, and seen it named among USA Today’s 10 Best Barbados Restaurants.

The East Meets West package includes 4 Meals at the Fish Pot, one for each night of your stay. How many other hotels can serve up award-winning beachfront dining? Not many, take our word for it.

The Atlantis Hotel and the East Coast

The Atlantis Hotel is as boutique as it gets, with just 10 chic ocean-facing suites. This East Coast hotel, sister to Little Good Harbour, overlooks the powerful Atlantic Coast. Dating back to 1883, extensive refurbishments saw The Atlantis Hotel reborn in 2009 as a sequestered hideaway; a place where you can see Barbados from a new and dramatic perspective. The East Coast is distinctly different from the rest of island, distinguished by its rugged terrain and lush hillsides. Smaller, colourful villages like Tent Bay (home to The Atlantis Hotel) come framed by coconut trees and banana plantations. It’s a great place to explore, for the landscapes and local towns are full of opportunities.

Just imagine throwing open your bedroom shutters to the rugged Atlantic coastline or ocean waves, before slipping back into the luxury of your four poster bed and watching the Caribbean sunrise. The Atlantis Hotel knows how to create unpretentious luxury and empowering exclusivity, and your 3 nights in a Coastal orOcean View Suite will be spent enjoying the lay of the land and lounging in the pool  - or even surfing, if you’re the adventurous type.

The Atlantis Restaurant also has a bit of a reputation as the place to enjoy a Sunday lunch, with a wine list personally selected by the owner to ensure quality. Much like The Fish Pot, the chef takes great pride in using locally sourced seafood and meat. The East Meets West package treats you to dinner nightly at The Atlantis Restaurant, so you can end every day with a good meal and a fine beverage. Life doesn’t get any better.

Free 3 Day Car Hire

The free car hire included in East Meets West is a real gift. Barbados is remarkably easy (and safe) to get around, and the H2 highway makes the north, south, and west of the island very easy to access. The eastern side of the island is peppered with smaller, country roads renowned for their stunning exotic views. There are a number of quality road trips you could can keep in your arsenal:

•  See the beaches beyond Bridgetown: Foul BayBottoms Bay, and Crane Bay – the latter widely considered one of the best beaches in the Caribbean.

•   Go Speightstown, home to the Arlington House Museum and some classic Bajan architecture, and pass through the rolling sugar cane fields to reach St Nicholas Abbey, the island’s oldest plantation house.

•   Head east to Bathsheba and have your breath taken by the strange shapes of thesea-weathered rocks, and then head a little inland to the Andromeda Botanic Gardens.

Also, don’t be afraid by all the honking that goes on: car horns are often used as a way of saying “hello” or “thank you” to other drivers, so don’t sweat it.

Discover the real Barbados

If you want to get a true feel for Barbados then you should seriously consider the East Meets West package. You can make that dream Bajan adventure a reality, and you’ll see things from parts of the island that even the tourist guides scarcely know.

The real Barbados is within your grasp Holidaymakers, so make it happen.

Good Things Come in Little Packages

Little Good Harbour

Let’s be honest….many foreigners view Barbados as becoming less rustic and more chic. Our little island paradise attracts tour packages and millionaires alike and while all bask in the warm heat and dive into the cool ocean, the sad reality is that many do not get to see and experience the REAL Barbados. Andrew Warden, proprietor of the Little Good Harbour and Atlantis hotels, both gorgeous boutique hotels on opposing sides of the island, aims to change all of that.

Australian born Andrew and his Barbadian wife Patricia have been running Little Good Harbour and it’s renowned restaurant The Fish Pot for 10 years now. Situated in the midst of Sherman’s fishing village, St. Peter, the hotel features 21 self-contained apartments that are spacious but cozy, four poster beds overlook the lush gardens, the pools are secluded and serene and the property breathes like a tropical paradise, a rare gem on this coast.

Andrew confesses that he first got the concept for Little Good Harbour from an Island Outpost book (by famous Jamaican visionary Chris Blackwell) that featured Strawberry Hill hotel, a well know celebrity stop in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. “It really inspired me, I wanted a place that encapsulated the simple island life, but with style, and Strawberry Hill really epitomized that island character.”

“People said we were baked when we started.” he explains, “They said it was too remote. Now however, with the ever expanding development of the West Coast, the only complaint we get these days is that it’s not far enough!”

The beach side has two apartments adjacent to the restaurant, literally a lazy stumble away from the glistening waters. Soft waves serve as a symphony while diners enjoy their meals and locals and sun kissed visitors stroll along the coast. As unassuming as it’s location may be, the restaurant has a loyal following; acclaimed food critic Michael Winner (The Times) has sung it’s praises, calling it the last touch of ‘old Barbados’ available to visitors and approving everything from the fresh seafood to the palatable wines chosen by Andrew himself.

Chef Stephen Belgrave has been overseeing the delectable menu for over 10 years now and insists of offering an authentic ‘taste of the Caribbean’.Lunch is a light affair with Panini’s, salads and pasta and dinner consists of surf and turf favourites such as fresh lobster, scallops, octopus and calamari as well as local catches. Dishes are kept simple but enhanced the flavours with local spices, and many ingredients are sourced from the neighboring fish market.

Bar aficionado Caesar is always on hand, mixing rum punches that guests can enjoy beachside in the cabanas (another enticing dining option) and most of the staff have been there from it’s inception, promising exceptional service to go with the ambiance. Prices are modest compared to other fine dining establishments on the West, but everything is indeed first class.

The newly built “Little Spa” was opened in November 2010 and adds another dimension to the property; with a lovely open plan guests are indulged in a distinctly tropical setting. Standard services such as mani/pedis, facials and massages are offered but the Spa goes one step further, providing visitors with options such as steam/sauna, hairstyling and late opening hours for convenience. While other hotels issue day passes to visitors it usually comes with a cost! Here at Little Good Harbour you can book a manicure, stay for lunch and enjoy the hotel facilities at no extra cost, a truly tempting opportunity.

Atlantis Hotel was originally situated adjacent to the old railway line and was one of the first hotels in the parish and today is the only hotel offering quality luxury, fine dining and first class service this side of “the rock”.

Andrew confesses that he doesn’t like to sit still and is always looking for a new challenge. It was this thirst for new challenges that prompted the Wardens/Kirby’s to buy and renovate the Atlantis Hotel in Tent Bay, Bathsheba on the East Coast. That and Andrew’s commitment to showing visitors and locals alike the very best Barbados has to offer scenically as well as culinary.

Established in the late 18th Century, Atlantis is a historic landmark property with panoramic views of the wild Atlantic coast, a coast rarely seen by high end visitors but which is without a doubt a local favourite. Originally situated adjacent to the old railway line, it was one of the first hotels in the parish and today is the only hotel offering quality luxury, fine dining and first class service this side of the rock.

Of course this is Bathsheba and surfers and sunbathers pepper the beach on any given day, enjoying the unpredictable breakers and local bars. Amid this environment Atlantis brings something entirely new to St. Joseph, and that is what makes it so appealing.

“The East coast is by far the prettiest side of the island,” says Andrew, “But too many come to the island and don’t venture near it. Mainly, I think, because it doesn’t offer the luxury accommodations the West and South do.”

With the renovations completed in late 2009, the hotel is authentic, rustic and serene, the bright breezy interior boast 8 spacious ocean view rooms in the main house and 2 two bedroom self contained apartments by the pool. It is stylish but uncomplicated, the décor colonial yet modernly vibrant, colours inspired by the bright fishing boats that dot the coastlines of Barbados.

Locals rave about the service, the modern amenities and especially about the ABC “All Bajan Cuisine”, a 100 year old promise that the restaurant has always kept and is well know for. Run by Manny Ward whom Warden calls ‘the most qualified restaurant manager on the island’. Thankfully the restaurant offers buffet on Wednesdays and Sundays and features local favourites such as pepper pot, flying fish, yam pie and cou cou - the other days is a la carte. Dinner is is served 6 nights of the week and is an eclectic mix including pickled seacat, conch fritters, rotis, stews, fresh lobster and roasted black belly lamb.

Andrew admits it‘s the menu that usually brings the guests; initially at least. “We are seeing more and more locals staying with us now, as they visit for lunch and then take advantage of the isolation of this coast for a weekend getaway.”

From coast to shimmering coast, the Warden’s are carving out a reputation as easy going hosts; providing visitors with a truly memorable stay and encouraging locals to step out of their comfort zone and experience something a little off the beaten path. With this effortless combination of modern elegance and island simplicity, every visitor is sure to leave with plans for their next escape in mind.

Our Perfect, Little Hideaway

We love coming to Little Good Harbour year after year and it just keeps getting better. Graham and Trevor are really the most welcoming hosts and we will definitely be coming back - next time with the children. Comfortable rooms, excellent staff, perfect level of service - could not ask for more.

My husband, adult daughter and I had an absolutely wonderful dining experience here last evening. The food and service were excellent. It was lovely to have dinner with the sound of ocean waves in the background. We were in an alcove right on the beach! The dessert, cocoanut crumble, and also lemon pie were I think the best I've had anywhere. A very pleasant, casual atmosphere with top drawer food and service.

Hello from higher latitudes! A week ago we were on a beach, and now I'm commuting to work in a snow storm. Such is life! Please pass along our warm thanks to your team. From our inviting villa, to the delicious Fish Pot and down to the charming floating dock and Capt. Dwayne. Both you and Andrew offered us what a corporate chain cannot- a stylish home away from home with an added personal touch. From our greeting at the beginning to our warm goodbye at the end, we were well taken care of and that made our Dad's birthday trip a perfect one. Little Good Harbour truly reflects the warmth and charm of Barbados. I look forward to seeing all of you again, Leslie
